So why do you need a wick trimmer?
Trimming your candle wick to about 5mm before each burn, will slow down the amount of wax that is melted and help prolong the life of your candle.
 
The trimmed wick also helps the candle burn more evenly and controls the soot. Although soy wax doesn't emit soot itself (unlike paraffin wax), if the wick is not trimmed then carbon can build up, and it will increase the chances of soot.
